Root Bound
Have you ever felt root bound? Like you’re living in a pot that’s cramped and suffocating. Your leaves are yellowing and as much as you try to “green yourself” it’s never enough.
“Oh, I’m fine,” I found myself saying. “I’ll just turn myself this way, so the dying part of me doesn’t show as much.”
Underneath, there’s wilting and suffering.
The truth is that it’s uncomfortable to “pot up.” You have to remove yourself from the old vessel opening up to the air of vulnerability, gather new soil, free up your roots and hold the courage to take up more space. You have to choose to heal the yellowing parts, which takes time - and sometimes pruning.
I’ve been here- many times. And now I routinely “pot up” as a practice to see how big and beautiful I can grow during this lifetime (and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon).
From the other side, I can assure you, it does get easier!
Decide which path makes your heart go, “I’ll take THAT pain.” I’ll take the pain of staying small or I’ll take the growing pain of taking an honest look at these damn roots.
I’ll continue internalizing my disappointment in this family or I’ll have the difficult conversation and deal with the (finally) honest conflict that may unfold.
I’ll keep earning this salary while my body/mind/spirit shrivels to a raisin left in a hot car or I’ll go buy the goat farm and make cheese and lay in the sweetgrass with my kids.
I’ll stay quiet in this position because “who am I to rise above my peers and I don’t want them to think I’m better than them” or I’ll apply for that management position and learn how to guide my colleagues with integrity and heart.
I don’t know what that choice is for you.
But I do know the process required to “pot up.” I do know the beautiful stretch of new, spacious soil. I know intimately the range of emotions that comes along with both roads.
Right now, I’m calling in you who want to “pot up.”
If you’re reading this thinking, “That’s me, I’m totally root bound,” AND you feel ready to pot up, come work with me.
You will get allllll the support, tools and individual coaching you need to handle this upgrade (AND set you up for the future ones as well!).
You’ll learn where to turn FIRST when you’re not sure what your next steps should be.
You’ll learn how to gently untangle those roots in a way that doesn't send you over the edge, but instead frees you up to BREATHE.
Together, we’ll cultivate the new soil making sure it has all the nutrients you need to THRIVE.
